This is Bandit, a 6-year old Quarter Horse gelding owned and loved by Larry and Jan Nelson.  This is his second lesson in the round pen.  He is pushy and has some trouble on the trail, so his owners brought him to Judie to work with them.  Last week he learned to yield his hind quarters, go in the direction he was sent, give Judie both eyes, and back up on the rope.  He also learned to yield to pressure to put his head down to be haltered and bridled.  Today we had another session in the freezing weather, and we reviewed what we did last week.

He did GREAT!

I added some more training without any halter or rope to get his respect, then we went into the arena and worked on the one-rein stop, walk, trot and canter, turning and going over cavalettis.  Jan and Larry were very in tune to what Judie was telling them and they are happy with Bandit's progress.  One of Jan's difficulties with him has been getting on him from the mounting block, so Judie worked with Bandit on approaching and standing still to be mounted.  He figured it out quickly.  He is a good boy and wants to please.

Next week we review and soon will hit the trails.

Learning a "soft feel" learning to give to the bit pressure

Bandit learns from Judie to do a "one rein stop".  This is very important when riding young horses -- its like an emergency brake.

Jan looks on as Judie explains the soft feel.  This is when the horse feels gentle pressure on the bit and finally drops his nose and gets light on the bit.
Yes!
